Where to Get Your Garden Sorted in Phuket

Phuket’s climate is genuinely excellent for gardening. The problem is finding decent supplies. The island has everything you need — but it is distributed across shops with no obvious hierarchy, and the tourist-friendly retail landscape means a lot of garden-adjacent product in places that are not really garden shops.

Here is where residents actually go.

For serious supplies: Global House

If you need volume — soil by the bag, irrigation pipe, power tools, garden furniture, fencing — Global House is your first stop. It is the Thai equivalent of a big-box building and garden centre. The range is broad rather than specialist, but for infrastructure and consumables it beats everywhere else on price and availability.

There are branches in Phuket Town and Thalang. The Thalang branch is the more useful one for north and central Phuket residents. Expect a big floor with everything from fertiliser to outdoor furniture, unremarkable staff knowledge at the garden end, and prices that make the specialist nurseries look expensive for basic supplies.

Not a destination for plants. A destination for everything else.

For plants and expert advice: Wangtapee Garden Center

Wangtapee is the place residents with genuine garden questions end up. It stocks tropical plants alongside pest control, speciality fertilisers, and tools — and the staff have actual knowledge of what grows well in Phuket’s conditions. If you are buying plants for a new villa garden and want something beyond palms and bougainvillea, this is where you start.

The focus is on practical tropical horticulture rather than decorative retail. You will find propagation materials, unusual seedlings, and people who can tell you what will survive a Phuket dry season without heroic irrigation.

For rare tropicals and herbs: Thip Garden

Thip Garden on Phraphuket Kaew Road in Kathu is the specialist option. Herbs, orchids, rare tropical species, and a nursery stock that runs deeper than most. They also handle landscaping and garden design — sprinkler and irrigation installation, planting plans, ongoing maintenance — which makes them useful for anyone setting up a villa garden from scratch.

If you are looking for something specific that Global House does not carry — an unusual palm variety, a particular flowering shrub, orchids for a shaded terrace — Thip Garden is where to check. The nursery section is worth browsing even without a specific item in mind.

What actually grows well here

Phuket’s combination of high humidity, strong sun, and a distinct dry season (roughly November–April) rules out a lot of what you might be used to growing elsewhere. What thrives:

Palms: Multiple species, year-round. The coconut palm is obvious; the Bismarck palm and Areca palm are the go-to landscaping options for most villa gardens.

Bougainvillea: Aggressive grower, tolerates dry conditions well, excellent for walls and fences. Prune after the rains.

Heliconia: The tropical lobster-claw plants. Grow fast, look distinctive, handle partial shade. Cut back after flowering.

Frangipani (Plumeria): The classic tropical garden standby. Drought-tolerant once established. Fragrant. Drops its leaves in the dry season — this is normal, not a problem.

Herbs: Thai basil, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and galangal all grow extremely well in Phuket. If you have any outdoor space at all, these are worth having.

What does not do well: Temperate vegetables (tomatoes, courgettes) struggle without a protected growing environment. If you want to grow them, raised beds with shade cloth in the hot season and significant irrigation is the realistic minimum.

The dry season reality

Gardens in Phuket need either drought-tolerant planting or irrigation. The dry season runs from approximately November to April. Without irrigation, anything that needs consistent moisture will struggle. Thip Garden and Wangtapee can both advise on drip irrigation setup — Global House sells the components.

If you are renting rather than owning, check your lease before installing any permanent irrigation. Most landlords are fine with it; some have preferences about what goes into the ground.
