What You Get to Take With You

What if starting again doesn't actually mean starting from zero?

The In-Between Week 4 — What You Get to Take With You by Johnny Carter

Starting again can feel brutal because we tend to measure the new beginning against everything we are leaving behind.

The old business had momentum. The old relationship had history. The old place felt familiar. The old identity came with a story you knew how to tell.

The new chapter can look very small beside it.

But starting again is not the same as starting from zero. You bring your judgment, mistakes, relationships, resilience, skills, humour, scars and perspective with you.

I have started over in different forms more than once, and the thing I notice now is that experience rarely tells you exactly what to do next. What it gives you is better pattern recognition. You notice people faster. You recognise your own warning signs. You recover from setbacks with a little less theatre.

That matters.

A useful way to approach a new beginning is to stop trying to recreate what you had and instead decide what from the old chapter is worth carrying forward.

Take the wisdom. Leave the unnecessary weight.

You do not need to prove that the previous chapter was a mistake in order to begin another one. It may have served you perfectly for the person you were then.

The next chapter is not a rejection of the last one. Done well, it is what the last one prepared you for.

Reflection: What have you learned from your last chapter that deserves a place in the next one?
