Why the Reef Needs This Kind of Help

Anyone who has snorkelled around Phuket’s shallower reefs knows what a healthy one looks like. The branching staghorn corals, the fish moving through them like they own the place, the sense of a whole system ticking over just below the surface. That is the baseline. What happened in 2024 was a significant departure from it.

The 2024 coral bleaching Thailand event was the fourth global mass bleaching on record. Between 50% and 80% of coral cover across Thai waters was affected. By early 2025, DMCR Thailand reef recovery data showed that around 60% to 70% of bleached corals in the Andaman Sea had survived and recovered. That is a better outcome than many expected. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources had moved quickly: deploying shading structures over vulnerable shallow areas, installing temperature loggers, relocating coral nurseries to deeper thermal refugia, and replanting across damaged sections of sea floor.

The complication is structural. Reef restoration Andaman Sea monitoring has since revealed a subtler shift. The fast-growing branching corals, the Acropora staghorns that give reefs their three-dimensional complexity, are being replaced by slower-growing boulder corals like Porites. The technique accelerates growth that would naturally take years into a matter of months. This is not observation work. It is active reef construction.

Licence to Clean — Plastic Interception at Sea

The Licence to Clean catamarans are five custom-built 5.8-metre vessels made from 100% recyclable HDPE plastic, operating under the designations LTC-001 to LTC-005 across Phuket’s busiest waterways: Kamala Klong, Sarasin Pier, Royal Phuket Marina, and Phang Nga Bay. They intercept floating waste before it reaches the outer reef. Collected plastics go to the Wongpanit Recycling Centre for sorting, generating income for local waste collectors in the process.

Bamboo Shark Breeding and Release

Bamboo shark conservation in Phuket addresses something most reef restoration programmes overlook: the food web. OFA breeds juvenile Chiloscyllium sharks in partnership with the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and releases them into the wild. A reef without functioning predator-prey relationships is a reef in decline, and this programme works on that problem directly.

Team Sea Garden — Seagrass and Mangrove Restoration

What to Bring

Pack light, but get these right.

Reef-safe sunscreen. Thailand prohibits chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC, or butylparaben in marine national parks. Non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide mineral formulas are the standard to meet. As a baseline, apply that standard on the beach regardless of whether you are inside a park boundary.
